The main raw material for making graphite electrodes

Graphite electrode refers to a high-temperature resistant graphite conductive material made of petroleum coke and pitch coke as aggregate and coal tar pitch as binder through a series of processes. Its main raw materials are petroleum coke, needle coke, and pitch coke.

Petroleum coke: Petroleum coke is a product obtained by distilling crude oil to separate light and heavy oil, and then thermally cracking the heavy oil. From the appearance, the coke is black lumps with irregular shapes and sizes. (or particles). The particles of coke have a porous structure, and the main constituent element is carbon, accounting for more than 80%, and the rest are hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and metal elements.

In addition, petroleum coke can be classified according to its appearance and performance. It can be divided into three types: sponge coke, honeycomb coke, and needle coke.

The appearance of sponge coke is similar to that of a sponge, with a lot of impurities and many small pores inside. The coke wall between the spaces is very thin, so it is not suitable as a raw material for the production of carbon materials.

The small pores inside the honeycomb coke are evenly distributed, with an obvious honeycomb structure, and have good physical and mechanical properties. This kind of petroleum coke can be used as raw materials for the production of ordinary power graphite electrodes, prebaked anodes, and electric carbon products.

There are obvious stripes on the surface of the needle coke, and the pores inside the coke block are arranged in a slender and elliptical direction, and after being broken into slender particles, it can be used as a raw material for the production of high-power and ultra-high-power graphite electrodes.

In addition, according to the different production raw materials, needle coke can be divided into oil-based needle coke and coal-based needle coke. Needle coke produced with petroleum residue as raw material is oil-based needle coke; needle coke produced with coal tar pitch and its fractions as raw material are coal-based needle coke.

Pitch coke: It is the solid residue obtained after high-temperature dry distillation or delayed coking of coal tar pitch. Regular power graphite electrodes can add a small amount of pitch coke.
